There was already international consensus on Hamid Karzai as Afghanistanian leader before Bonn conference on Afghanistan in 2001, former first vice-president Mohammad Younus Qanooni said Thursday.
Speaking at an event in Kabul, Qanooni, dismissed claims that Karzai was chosen all of a sudden at the Bonn conference or the united front was responsible for his rise to power.
He, who was one of key attendees at the conference, said that U.S., EU, Russia, India, Pakistan and Iran had approved Karzai.
“Big decisions cannot be made in conferences,” Qanooni said.
Citing a book of US diplomat James Dobbins, the “orchestrator” of Bonn conference, Qanooni said that the director of Pakistan’s spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence, had told the diplomat that Karzai was a suitable person for the position.
“This doesn’t mean that Karzai belonged to ISI as it assassinated his father,” Qanooni said.
During the event, Qanooni also said that Afghanistan failed to take advantage of opportunities following Bonn conference.
He criticized division among jihadis, adding the country’s problems cannot be resolved without a national consensus.
